Parol-Making Workshop and Competition and Paskong Pinoy PDF Print E-mail

For three consecutive weekends (20 and 27 November and 5 December 2010), the Philippine Embassy in Vienna, in cooperation with the VIC Club Filipino and the Council of Filipino Associations in Austria, organized the Parol-making Workshop and Competition. The event was divided into two categories – Category A (ages 5-7) and Category B (ages 8-15). The children were taught how to make a parol by Mr. Wilson Tan-Ho. The finished products of the children were graded according to individual effort, originality, creativity, and aesthetic appeal or general impression of the art. The children were all excited to make the parol, much to the delight of the parents who were there to witness the children doing their best to make their own parols.

The winners of the Parol-making competition were announced during the Paskong Pinoy held on 8 December 2010 at the Parish of Our Lady of Mr. Carmel in Stefan-Fadinger-Platz. Sheldon Santos, 5 years old, got the First Prize for Category A and Chelsea Reyes, 9 years old, got the First Prize for category B.

Paskong Pinoy has become an annual Christmas celebration of Filipinos in Austria. It highlighted the Parol-making workshop and competition, the play Panuluyan (The Nativity of the Child Jesus), which were performed by Filipino-Austrian children and some of their parents, and the Christmas carolling contest.
